Yesterday was a Great day. My boss gave me $800 for doing a good job on the Truman back in Janurary (next time I'm getting a better hotel/room). I was amazed and utterly surprised. Gordon says that on-the-spot bonuses usually happen twice a year... But I'd rather think its because I earned it.
When I got home I decided I had to go kayaking. Checked to see if there was water in the creek, found some, changed into clothes I wouldn't mind having wet and muddy. My Romany is easier to carry than the plastic boat was even though she's a foot longer... Fiberglass Is lighter.
And alas, the creek IS Muddy! I could use a platform dock and some boards out to it. But even then, it's pretty much empty at mid-low tide. Yesterday, I made it out, it gets deeper just a little bit away from my house, but I couldn't make it back in. I had my sidekick with me (in a ziplock bag) and checked the tide charts. Great, low tide at 8:40pm. Still 3 hours away, but already too low to get home. Walking in that mud is not an option... it's at least a foot deep and really acted like it wanted to swallow me up. And it smells bad. Eww.
The new (huge) houses across the creek are on a dredged channel and have SAND along their shore. Only 2 houses so far, but they have 13 or 14 lots planned... probably all in the $700k range. But really, Dillon's Creek is nice. Some day they'll dredge my side and all these little cottages (that sold once for $50k and now are worth about $150k) will be prime property. But who knows how long from now that'll happen.
Anyway, Joe was supposed to be over at 5:30 and sure enough, just as I was going to call him I saw him waving from the shore near the house. I called, but he had his phone in the car. He must have realized I wasn't coming back because he got in the truck and called me while on his way towards the other side of the creek. We met on the bank near the new house that's for sale. I told him I wasn't ready to quit but wanted to paddle to the end of the creek and meet him on the Gilford Park side. Only took me about 5 minutes to get there going with the wind and the current.
Try balancing a 16' kayak in a 6' truck bed.. without scratching the truck's paint! Or the kayaks! I rode in the back with it and we made it home ok. Only a couple of blocks, thank God. That was scary. I wonder how one joins the Gilford Park Yacht Club.
