Didn't leave Laurel til about 11. Tim made a ham and cheese omelette which was really really good! Parked at Greenbelt and waited for a train. Got to L'Enfant and decided we could walk to the Smithsonian from there. Worked out really well, faster than switching to the red line.
I haven't done any of the museums yet so didn't much care where we went. Tim says he's been to the Air and Space museum many times but hadn't been to the Planetarium, so we got tickets for that. Our donation I guess. The show was a 20 minute movie about the universe. Kinda cute, like watching IMAX on a round ceiling. They had captioning on a screen near the front, but I found it annoying to try to read it because it was too far away from the action on the screen. But better than none perhaps.
Afterwards we wandered through the air exhibits starting with the Red Barron and ending in a Ready Room on a carrier (they call it the CVM 76, M for Museum?).
There was a 1:100 scale model of the USS Enterprise and I had to point out that their JBD 4 is the wrong size, and JBD 3 overlaps the landing strip too far. I'm not sure about that though because the 65 has a different deck configuration than the Nimitz Class carriers. Will have to look it up.
It got to be 2 and we were hungry so we wandered across the mall, past the Capitol and ended up on 7th Ave which anyone who's been to MCI Center for hockey games (not this year) is familiar with. We ate at Ella's pizza/italian. We ordered a pepperoni 10" pizza (stone fired, so thin crust) and their special of the day sandwich (foccacia with fresh mozzerela and prociutto and some tomato) sooo good. I opted to eat most of that myself and let Tim have the pizza.
After lunch I wanted to go out to Crystal City and check out my future home (*fingers crossed*). Note that it is on the Blue OR the Yellow line, inbetween the Pentagon City and Crystal City stations. Pentagon City has a huge mall ("Fashion Center"). From there the building is a 5 minute walk. There's a spot where 12th St dead ends and continues again on the other side of a parking lot / alley way. I've been told that at night it is better to take the metro to Crystal City and use the underground pedestrian tunnels and then cut through the hotel lobbies to get home. I'm sure I'll get used to it and figure everything out.
I don't love the area... It's all high rises and hotels and corporate apartments... But... Lots of stores too, and being ON the Metro is great for sight seeing. Mom says Gramma says she is going to come stay with me a while since she's never seen Washington.
I wanted to meet Don from UVA in Starbucks in Georgetown around 6, so we wasted time until about 5:30 then took the Metro back up to Rosslyn. I knew it would be a bit of a walk from there, past the Key Bridge Marriott and over the bridge (I've stayed there 3 times now) then up Wisconsin Ave to 1810. Well I think M St crosses Wisconsin at about 1200. There probably Were 600 addresses between M St and the Starbucks! And slightly up hill too. I don't know how they can call that Georgetown still! Anyway, we made it at 6:30 and got to chat for a little while. Don't think I'd have dragged Tim up there if I'd known how far it was :) luckily we got a bus back to the Foggy Bottom metro station.
