Swimming!

I've been swimming at the gym 3 times so far. I really am enjoying it. Much better than other cardio hamster wheels and even rowing. I swam on the team in high school - 7th through 11th grade. I haven't done any laps since then really.

So far I've been swimming about 45-60 minutes at a time while Don does weights and cardio upstairs. I got a pair of goggles last time and that really made it even more fun. The pool at ACAC downtown is 4 lanes wide with 2 of them set up with lane lines and 2 open. Usually there have been 6 or 7 people in the pool when I'm there - so you end up sharing a lane with someone. I need to remember to try to stay away from the wall. My stroke of choice is the breast stroke and I have given the ladders a painfully hard kick a couple of times.

Last time I went I was sharing the 2 open lanes with 2 other people. A guy came in and just stood on the side waiting. I headed to the ladder to grab a kick board from the equipment room and I'm pretty sure he said "are you leaving?" No hearing aids, so I'm really guessing. I said no I was just getting a kick board. He still kept standing there. So when I got back into the pool I went over to another lane where there was just one woman in there. I guess he didn't want to join her because he hopped into where I had been. He only swam about 1 lap and then got out and did all kinds of stretching on a mat next to the pool and then left. Very weird. Another guy there was wearing so much cologne I could somehow smell it over the chlorine!

I find myself trying to count the number of laps I've swum and failing miserably. I can't even keep track of the first 4. Maybe I need to swim 100s (4 lengths) or 200s (8 lengths). Thus far I'm letting myself do whatever stroke I want. Anything is better than my previous routine of nothing (or just weight training when we get to the gym). Instead of resting at the end of the pool I'm taking the kickboard for a lap now and then.

I'm a little worried about my hair, even if ACAC says their pools are more salt than chlorine. So I'm buying myself some Ultra Swim. Hurray for Amazon! It makes it really easy to find. Here are the affiliate links for me to click on as soon as I finish posting this! :)
