Nice weekend
Sep. 7th, 2004 09:52 amThis is mostly just going to be a "we did this, then we did that" post... I'm not awake enough to do much thinking... I'll be lucky if I can remember what we did.
Friday we walked out to Island Heights and watched the sun set. The mosquitoes would have been bad so we didn't linger long. But we looked at the Victorian houses and wondered why they had to paint them pink and purple and orange... I'd live in IH, it's nice there. But expensive.
Saturday I made waffles and we attempted to go kayaking. No problem launching or parking near the Gilford Park Yacht club. The bay was choppy from the holiday weekend traffic, we probably should have gone somewhere else (like the Browns Mills lakes). I didn't think he would like my Corona very much... he didn't. Unfortunately, his legs are too long for my Romany! I hadn't seen that one coming... I'm going to sell the Corona... it just isn't a good boat for people who aren't smaller than I am. :)
So we went back to my place and then headed to the beach. Arriving at Island Beach State Park we found a sign that said 'no swimming, dangerous currents.' So we turned around and went to Seaside instead. We parked near 9th ave and had to walk up to 5th ave to buy beach badges. Not a big deal. $8 each though, so even with just 2 people it's cheaper to go to the state park ($10 a car). It was crowded but not packed, and the waves were really fun. But Strong! I got knocked down and swirled around a couple of times. Quite scary really. We went to the OB diner for dinner. I hadn't been there in a long time. Had a seafood combo platter that was pretty good. Yummy scallops.
Sunday we were lazy for most of the morning and then went to play Mini golf in Lavallette. I'm really not that good at mini golf! I need more practice. Amazing how lightly you have to hit the ball... huh. I did OK the second round... but generally if I miss my first close putt then I'll miss the 2nd and 3rd too out of frustration. So I ended up with a +5 I think on the 2nd game (pay once play twice before 5pm). After that we went home to get pants (it was cool out!) and stopped at Hot Tamale for Mexican (Mmmm!). Then off to Great Adventure to use the free after 5pm passes that came with the $31 passes I got at work. Next time I'm going to just buy 1 pass and use the all day pass for after 5 too. If anyone wants to go... I have 2 day passes that need to be used this month.
I'm not sure I want to go again.. it was that fun. :-\ First off, it's a holiday weekend yet they were only running ONE TRAIN on a bunch of rides. We waited WAY WAY too long for Rolling Thunder. We got there at 5:30, rode Medusa, and then got in line for Rolling Thunder. We didn't get ON Rolling Thunder until after the sun was set and it was dark outside. Feeling frustrated we crossed the park to find Nitro. Waited in line for a while and then it broke down. ARGH. The evening ended ok though. We rode the merry-go-round and then did 2 walk-on rides on Great American Scream Machine. I like Arrow coasters that still run fairly well. 7 inversions.. whee. The line for Superman: Ultimate Flight wasn't bad either, but that was our last ride of the night. Oh well.
Monday we went back to the beach. To the state park this time... they still had the no swimming signs up, so we parked in one of the fishing access lots instead of bothering with the guarded beach. If they won't let you swim there you might as well go where they never let you swim. Turns out we didn't really Want to swim.. the waves were that strong! It was also quite windy and a little bit cool. The beach was pretty much empty though, just how I like it. :) We sat by the dunes and basked in the sun... got a bit burned (medium rare). Left around 4pm and had ice cream at the Sundae Times on 35 in Seaside Park. Cinnamon ice cream is really good.
