Finally back online at "home". I got the DSL modem from Earthlink yesterday and the line was supposed to be activated yesterday. But it wasn't working. I called and the guy asked me for my email address and password and then said that it didn't match what they had on file. Then he told me, and I'm not making this up, "if it would be easier you can provide the digits of the credit card number and the 3 digit code by the signature on the back and the expiration date." WTF??? I told him I wasn't giving him that information, but at that time my sidekick decided to quit working and the call got disconnected.

Anyway, this morning it still wasn't working, so I called and they tried to tell me it must be my phone line that was the problem. Apparently since I'm deaf and hadn't actually made any calls they decided it must not be working. I told her I had used dialup to access the internet fine, and asked if the fact that toll calls were blocked would affect the DSL. She said yes, definitely. So I tried to cancel it, since I don't have control over the phone bill, the apartment contract person does, I don't ever see a bill, same with cable. But she told me to go check on the DSL Sync light again and it wasn't blinking anymore. I tried the password again and it worked fine. Bizarre! She didn't ask for any ID information at all until she was trying to enter her trouble ticket to help me out. Turned out we didn't need that either.

At least it's working now. I can put my server back up and host megs and megs of pictures!
